Sexual abuse pains, frightens, and potentially traumatises children. Feelings of shame mediate a child's recovery from abuse and are associated with low self-esteem. Low self-esteem leads children to withdraw from social interactions. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the experience of shame and self-esteem of the sexually abused adolescent girls in Manila, Philippines. The study design was analytic correlation with cross-sectional approach. The experience of shame of the respondents was assessed by Experience of Shame Scale (ESS) and self-esteem was assessed by Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The results of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between the experience of shame and self-esteem of the sexually abused adolescent girls with p value (0.001) (r = -0.799). The present study examined the possible predictive effect of the experience of shame on the self-esteem. Higher the experience of shame leads to lower the self-esteem among the sexually abused adolescent girls.Keywords

In contemporary India, the increase in child sexual abuse is an endemic. The high prevalence of CSA and adverse consequences of sexual abuses in children warrants an increased investment in the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies. The purpose of this study was to develop an intervention program for sexually abused female children on enhancing self-compassion and reducing trauma-related shame and to pilot test its feasibility and usability in the clinical practice. Development of the program involved the integration of qualitative and quantitative research designs. Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and Trauma-Related Shame Inventory (TRSI) were used to measure the level of self-compassion and trauma-related shame among the participants. Interviews and Focused-Group Discussions were carried out to get a better understanding of the severity of these problems. Basing on these, a thirteen modular intervention was developed integrating the Self-compassion theory , Shame Resilience Theory, Compassion- focused Therapy and Art Therapy. The program was subjected for validation of inter-disciplinary experts and pilot tested to ten sexually abused female children. The intervention was positively received by the participants and the results of the pilot test showed improvement in the level of self-compassion and reduction in trauma-related shame among the children.Keywords

The present study investigated a child-centered therapeutic program known as Compassion focused Visual Art Therapy (CVAT) for female children who were sexually abused. The study was based on the theoretical and therapeutic foundations of the Self-compassion Theory, Shame Resilience Theory, Compassion-focused Therapy and Art Therapy. There were 'two group randomized controlled trial' with 36 children who were sexually abused and were residing at child welfare centres in Kerala, India. Self-Compassion Scale and Trauma Related Shame Inventory were used as assessment tools. This study was conducted in two phases; Phase I: development of CVAT and Phase II: the assessment of effectiveness of the CVAT, employing true experimental research method. The results were analyzed using mean scores, paired sample t-test, t-test for independent sample and Cohen's d test. The statistical analysis between the pre-test and post-test scores of experimental group showed significant differences (p=.001) at 0.05 level and the scores of the experimental and control groups showed significant difference (p=.001) in both variables in the post test. CVAT is efficacious in enhancing self-compassion and reducing trauma-related shame of the sexually abused children.Keywords
